Root canal therapy is needed when the deepest part of the tooth (the pulp) becomes infected. This can be the result of a deep crack, physical injury to the tooth, or an untreated cavity. The decay process takes a while to move through the hard outer layer (enamel) into the soft layers inside the tooth. When the decay expands to the inner portion of the tooth, an endodontic infection results. If the infected pulp is not removed, it will become increasingly painful as the infection spreads. If neglected, it is possible the infection may spread to the bloodstream and threaten your overall health. A visit to board-certified dentists for evaluation and treatment can help avoid this worst-case scenario.
Also known as endodontic treatment, root canal therapy at Smile Blvd Dental removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and then seals the tooth. Our Board-certified dentist may recommend root canal therapy to Richardson, TX patients because it treats the infection and keeps the decay from spreading to other teeth (and creating larger problems).
Though root canals are a common dental treatment, patients often put off going to the dentist to address tooth pain because of dental anxiety. Our staff will do their very best to make sure you are at ease and comfortable.
You may have an infected tooth if you have any of the following symptoms: pain when chewing or touching a tooth, jaw pain, swollen and tender gums (or pimple) near a tooth, dark or discolored tooth. or lingering hot or cold sensitivity. If you are experiencing any of these issues, please don’t let dental anxiety or fear keep you from getting your tooth examined by our staff. Set up an appointment at Smile Blvd Dental as soon as you feel or see any changes in your mouth.
Today Nancy cleaned my teeth, and I met Dr. Joe for the first time since he took over Dr Porter's practice. We had heard from many friends and family members how kind and gentle Dr. Joe is. I think we're in good hands again!
Dr. Joe is very professional, knowledgeable and highly skilled. I appreciate that Dr. Joe takes a more conservative approach. Keeping patients calm and fully educating them on their dental health. Everyone in the office is great including my hygienist Adriana. I highly recommend Dr. Joe and this office if you want someone who is trustworthy, and professional treats you with care, and goes the extra mile for his patients!
Great dentists are hard to find. That’s why, when you find one, you don’t let them go. Dr Joe is, by far, the best dentist I’ve gone to. He’s personable, friendly, and great at his craft. If you are in the market for a new dentist, you can’t go wrong with Smile Blvd

Prior to the treatment, Our Richardson dentist will examine your tooth and the radiographs (x-rays) to determine the extent of damage or decay and whether antibiotic therapy is needed. We do not want you to feel nervous, anxious, or scared during your appointment. Many individuals request nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help them feel relaxed through the root canal procedure. Our dentists are very understanding about dental anxieties and will help you make the appropriate decision on how to proceed. To perform an endodontic procedure, we will access and examine the innermost part of your tooth and then carefully remove the infected pulp. From there, the inner chamber will be thoroughly cleansed and disinfected. Once it is cleansed, the tooth is filled with a dental filler (gutta percha) to seal and protect it from further decay. Most cases will require a crown to protect the tooth and restore it to normal function.
There may be some tenderness or sensitivity following the procedure, but this should not last more than a few days and can be reduced with anti-inflammatory medications. You should avoid chewing hard, crunchy foods for the first 24 hours. Most patients return to normal activities the next day. You should schedule a follow-up appointment for about six months post-procedure. We will examine the area to see that the infection is gone and that there is no cause for concern. Afterward, you should continue to schedule bi-annual dental checkups and cleanings to maintain your oral health.
Due to advances in medical techniques and technology, a root canal can be a quick, simple process to treat an infected tooth. Treating a dental infection should never be postponed or neglected. Your dental treatment at Smile Blvd Dental can be free from discomfort and help avoid further tooth pain and more serious complications. Contact our office in Richardson, TX to schedule a consultation with board-certified dentists to learn more about root canal therapy and ways to improve your dental health.
